CREATING A GOOD BUSINESS DOMAIN NAME - 7 USEFUL TIPS
To create a good domain name many factors are put into consideration.
First of all you must have a reason for setting up a domain. And this reason could fall into any of this two broad categories;
1.) For business reasons
2.) For personal uses
BUSINESS DOMAINS
To pick a domain name for a business purpose/reason, there are certain factors that will help you pick a good domain name, these includes;
a.) What type of online business do you intend running with your domain- the type of business you wish to do online will definitely affect what you pick as your domain name, this is because your domain name has to be related to what ever business you do. For example you don’t expect people who are looking for health related issues to visit a domain that bears a name on real estates.
b.) Use .com domain tags for domain business- this is because domains using the .com tags have universal acceptance compare to others like .org, .net, .ng, e.t.c. Must people who come online are familiar with .com tags after every domain/website name and it is by far the most marketable. Therefore there is the tendency that someone who wants to remember your domain name may mistake it to end with a .com tags when your domain ends with a .net, or .org.
c.) Avoid similar or familiar domain names- why you should avoid similar domain names is that a company may also be using that name and they may press against you to relinquish your domain especially when they have all it takes to do so. So to avoid you having a bad turn around in your business online after a little success avoid the similar domain names.
d.) Catchy domain name- to attract people to your domain it must be catchy in the sense that it is easy to read, understand, interpret and remember. You domain should be once that makes people curious to know what it’s all about. Make it short.
e.) You domain name should suggest what it is all about- if your domain is on political issues it should have a name that will suggest it is politically inclined
f.) Be specific about your domain name- to increase value to your domain and there by draw goo traffic to it, it should be a domain that tell what area it is focused on e.g. if you deal on Nissan motors instead of making your domain for example autodealers.com you should make it more specific like nissanautodealers.com.
g.) Use common names- use common words that are familiar to people so as to help increase traffic to your site.

PICKING DOMAIN
PICKING DOMAIN
The criteria you use to pick a good domain name depends on how you want your domain name to work for you. For instance, if your focus is going to be on using the domain name to tell search engines about the nature of your web site, then you will most likely take a different approach than if you were choosing a domain name that is easily memorable. My personal preference is to integrate the two approaches as much as possible.
Picking a Good Domain Name for Search Engines
Search engines have gotten much smarter over the years, but they are still fairly limited when it comes to finding information in a domain name. However, there are certain techniques you can use to improve a search engine's ability to parse useful information out of your domain name.
Use Keywords In Your Domain Name
Using keywords in your domain name is a great first step when it comes to search engine optimization in general. For example, say you run an ecommerce web site that sells used books about web design. When people use a search engine to find your web site, they will be using keywords such as "used books" and "web design". These are the keywords you want in your domain name.

Use Separators Between Keywords in Your Domain Name
Search engines use automated programs to interpret, or "parse", the information on your web site. When they look for information in your domain name, they look for recognizable separators between keywords in order to determine what the keywords are. In a domain name like the one used above, for instance (www.usedwebdesignbooks.com), all of the keywords run together so the search engine doesn't know what the individual words are. They could be "us" and "sign" and "boo" for all the search engine knows. In the following example, however, the search engine can see an active separator between the keywords:
www.used-web-design-books.com
The best character to use to separate these words is a dash, most likely because dashes are used to separate words like "high-flying", so a search engine will interpret the dash as a space.
Picking a Good Domain Name for People
When you're trying to pick a good domain name for people, the trick is finding a domain name that is memorable. Most of the simplest, easiest to remember domain names - like single words and 4-letter acronyms - have already been taken, so you will need to be a bit creative to find a domain name that people will remember.
Use a Short Domain Name
Most of the time, the shorter the domain name is, the easier it is to remember. This isn't always the case, but it's a good principle to work by. Lets use the used web design book store example here again. Some easily memorable names might be:
www.ubwd.comwww.webbook.comwww.gooddeals.com
Another useful technique involves using outrageous or strange domain names, that don't necessarily have anything to do with the actual subject matter of the web site. These kinds of domain names work great on T-Shirts and hats.
As I mentioned earlier, I find that trying to find a domain name that is effective with search engines and is also easy to remember is the best route to take. This of course requires the most creativity and experimentation, but is the best technique to use in the long term.
Picking a Good Domain Name for Better Search Engine Placement
How to pick a good domain for better search engine placement as part of optimizing your site for the search engines during the design phase.
For the perfect domain name matchup in a search engine so that a page of our "Alfa Romeo Alfetta" website comes up #1 in the search results, the website would be named:
www.alfa-romeo-alfetta.com or www.alfaromeoalfetta.com
The website name would equal exactly the keywords in the search. Picking the correct domain name for a website is a good first step and can help a lot in how near the top of the search engine rankings your site shows up when someone searches for your key words. It certainly won't hurt to have a great domain name that exactly describes your website, especially for a new website.
You can find out which domain names are available by going to this site: Domain Tools or Domain Name Soup. Enter possible names for your website. If the domain name is taken, it will tell you. Sometimes you can buy a domain name that is for sale, but watch out for scams. Someone tried to sell me www.wiar.com (which would be a lot easier to tell someone than "words in a row dot com" when I'm on the phone) but they wanted $40,000 for that short domain name. I laughed if off--it's not worth that much to me.
When you find a good domain name is available, you can go to www.registerwizards.com or GoDaddy and register it cheaply and easily. Play around with some other names for your site -- get creative, and don't forget about the .net and .org and .biz possibilities. If you'd like help registering a domain name, feel free to contact us. We can even do it for you, for a small fee.
(As an aside: If you need a good dedicated server for your site, the best one we've found, and the one we use and recommend to our clients, is Data393 They offer a lot of practical features and are very responsive--and are inexpensive as dedicated servers go. Most websites DO NOT need dedicated servers, however. If you do happen to need the absolute top of the line in website hosting, use Rackspace, which offers "fanatical support".)
We also recommend 1and1 web hosting, and GoDaddy is also acceptable (don't sign up for the Website Tonite service at GoDaddy - your site will not do well in the search engines if you do). Be sure you specify that you want a static, dedicated IP address for your site.
Some people frown on using hyphens in a domain name--but hyphens can work fine as part of a domain name. That said, in our experience, using more than two hyphens in a domain name can be bad and get a site penalized at Google. Some of the search engines recognize the words between the hyphens in a domain name and give your site better placement for them. Every little bit helps. There does not seem to be any problem using as many hyphens as you want in PAGE names.
You have the option of using this second domain name for your site solely for the purpose of registering it with the search engines for good placement of your website. So what if it ends in .net or .org, or has hyphens in it -- who cares? It won't matter. For your normal marketing purpose, you can always stick with the domain name you already have, ending in .com and without any hyphens. It's true that most people will think your website should end in "dot com", and it can be a real hassle to have to tell them there are a couple of hyphens in it every time you tell someone your URL. To illustrate how this works: if you click to www.search-engine-friendly.com, it will take you to our Words In a Row website.
Duplicate domains: it's not a good idea to try to get 50 domain names with your keywords in them, and register them all with the search engines, pointing to the same website or duplicate content. This is, in fact, a very bad idea. It's a form of spam called "domain name spam" and to be avoided at all costs. If you've already done this, contact us for how to handle by setting up an IP funnel, so that you don't get penalized for it at Google.
If you have already registered a domain name and it is not what you'd like, don't despair. You can register as many domain names as you like for $15.00 each per year through www.registerwizards.com or GoDaddy and have them all point to the same website (IP address). A lot of the good domain names are gone, but if you find a better name than the one you have, great! Snag it and have it point to your IP address. If not, write this step off and move on! For example, we bought the domain www.wordsinarow.com back in 1996. We also bought www.search-engine-friendly.com, and sometimes use that domain instead. Both of them point to our website. At some point we may switch over to using only www.search-engine-friendly.com, but we haven't done so to date. Technically it is not difficult to make the switch and make sure that all the Google PageRank from all the thousands of links to our site are carried over to the new domain; frankly I don't think we'd get very much of an improvement of Google rankings out of making such a switch, so we haven't done it.
How to pick a Domain Name that even your Granny will remember
Have you ever wanted to go to a site that you were visiting the other day, but for the life of you, you can’t now remember? No, it’s not time to pack it in and start taking more fish oil for forgetfulness – the truth is that the domain name that you were thinking about just wasn’t that memorable!
When you are starting an online business or putting an existing business online, you will find that there are plenty of reasons for you to be concerned about the domain name that you are going to be choosing. Your domain name can make the difference between mediocre sales and spectacular one, and once you have picked it, you will, for the most part, be stuck with it. I’ve found that your domain name is part of your brand strategy as well as part of the way that people identify you, and if you want everyone to keep you in mind, no matter what their memory is, you’ll find that you need to keep a few things in mind.
Should I Use Dashes?
You’ll find that one way to break up the URL and to get a more commonly worded domain name is to break up the domain name with dashes. While there are some successful websites that do this, you’ll find that there are reasons to avoid it. It is generally understood that websites with dashes look less professional than ones without, and you will also find that for the most part, typing in the dash will be a bit more difficult for your customers. While this isn’t a huge thing, you’ll find that this small bit of difficulty can make a difference. Unless your business actually has a dash in the name, avoid this convention.
Choosing the Extension
When you go to choose your domain name, you’ll find that you have a choice between addresses and their extensions. If at all possible, you’ll find that choosing the .com extension is going to work the best for you. While choosing the .net or .org option could also work, you’ll find that generally .net is best for Internet or tech related business and .org usually refers to a non-profit organization of some kind. You’ll also find that if you are looking to market only to a particular country that you can pick a country specific extension, like .ca for Canada and .fr for France.
Subject of the Domain Name
Your domain name should reflect directly on your business. For instance, your company’s name can be made into your domain name, unless it has already been taken. You’ll find that this will cut down on confusion. If you cannot get your company’s name, you may want to take a look at what your company does. When someone looks at your URL, they should have a rough idea of what you do, whether it’s computer repair, clothing alterations or cheese sale!
Things to Stay Away From
The more variables that happen to be in your domain name, the more difficult people are going to find it. In my experience, you should never use abbreviations unless they are extremely obvious and you should stay away from numbers as well. This makes it easy for your customers and for the search engines to find you and this can go a long way towards getting your traffic where you want it.
Shorter Is Better!
Remember what I was saying before about the memory issue? The truth is that most people don’t have great memories and if their friend mentioned something about your site, they are going to want to get back to it. If they can’t remember it, on the other hand, everyone’s got problems and you will find that you want to avoid this at all costs. Keep it as short and as recognizable as you can. Balancing between a good length and a memorable name can be a bit tough, but it is important to keep in mind.
Choosing the right domain, one that even your grandmother can remember is extremely important if you want to do some Internet marketing. Lots of people are looking to make sure that they can get the right results when it comes to putting their work online, so get off to a good start with a domain name that is easy to remember!
I hope you find this post useful and as always - you’re more than welcome to post your feedback in the comments

Picking a good Domain Name
Creating a Business Domain Name
To create a good domain name many factors are put into consideration.First of all you must have a reason for setting up a domain. And this reason could fall into any of this two broad categories;
1.) For business reasons
2.) For personal uses
To pick a domain name for a business purpose/reason, there are certain factors that will help you pick a good domain name, these includes;a.) What type of online business do you intend running with your domain- the type of business you wish to do online will definitely affect what you pick as your domain name, this is because your domain name has to be related to what ever business you do. For example you don’t expect people who are looking for health related issues to visit a domain that bears a name on real estates.b.) Use .com domain tags for domain business- this is because domains using the .com tags have universal acceptance compare to others like .org, .net, .ng, e.t.c. Must people who come online are familiar with .com tags after every domain/website name and it is by far the most marketable. Therefore there is the tendency that someone who wants to remember your domain name may mistake it to end with a .com tags when your domain ends with a .net, or .org.c.) Avoid similar or familiar domain names- why you should avoid similar domain names is that a company may also be using that name and they may press against you to relinquish your domain especially when they have all it takes to do so. So to avoid you having a bad turn around in your business online after a little success avoid the similar domain names.d.) Catchy domain name- to attract people to your domain it must be catchy in the sense that it is easy to read, understand, interpret and remember. You domain should be once that makes people curious to know what it’s all about. Make it short.e.) You domain name should suggest what it is all about- if your domain is on political issues it should have a name that will suggest it is politically inclinedf.) Be specific about your domain name- to increase value to your domain and there by draw goo traffic to it, it should be a domain that tell what area it is focused on e.g. if you deal on Nissan motors instead of making your domain for example autodealers.com you should make it more specific like nissanautodealers.com.g.) Use common names- use common words that are familiar to people so as to help increase traffic to your site.

Search Engine Optimisation - On Page Factors
When we discuss search engine optimisation we are really discussing how to set our web pages so that the Google bot will notice them and index them well. As seen as we know we have to set things up for Google on our pages there are some things that need to be clear.
Hilltop this is an algorithm created 10 years ago and it basically analyses how sites link to together and distinguishes between expert and authority pages. Expert pages are those pages which have a lot of out bound links to back up their resources. The authority pages have the links pointing at them as they or provide the unique information, or at least that is how Google sees it.
The Sandbox is a term used for one of Google's so called filters. It relates to new sites that have recently been indexed. When your new site enters the sandbox it will no longer be indexed and may stay that way for 6 to 12 months. However not every new site goes through the sandbox and it is simply speculation that it exists.
Ok now that's out of the way lets discuss some on page SEO factors that you are going to need to implement in order to optimise your site. One thing that I must bring up immediately is the false premise that meta tags for descriptions and keywords are going to help in your fight for relevancy. They will help users looking for your site and help search engines describe it correctly but will do nothing for your rank or index result.
Some things that are musts for any search engine optimiser are keywords in the domain name, title tags, heasd tags and content. You may also want to include 3 to 5 outbound links to sites with similar content, this will help establish your site as an authority site. Another thing to do to enhance any search engine optimisation campaign is to bold any keyword text within your content.
It is good practice to choose around 50 keywords for your site and to dedicate a page to each one of them ensuring each page follows the above rules. Also ensure to build links to each page individually ensuring the relevant anchor test is used.
Search engine optimisation is a vast subject and one that can take years to fully master, you have to patient and consistent if you really want your efforts to pay off.

Other ways to monetize a website are to sell advertising to other websites, to use Google advertising and to sell links on the site.
All of these monetization methods work together to make a relatively small website into a high-earning site. These free work from home programs often take some study and practice, but they are fun, flexible and have the potential to be extremely lucrative ways to earn an income from home.

Millions of people write blogs, and there are lots of good reasons to do so. Besides being a great way to express your thoughts and discuss your opinions, it can also be a great way to earn money. It costs nothing to start a blog, and it can bring in anywhere from a few dollars here and there to millions of dollars a year.
Other people choose to create a more general website that isn't formatted like a blog. This type of general-information website can also earn a substantial amount of money for its owner, and with no up-front costs necessary.

Google Android Mobile Phones
Google Android sounds like the name of a mobile phone, but it's actually not. The name Google Android is used to refer to the OS of the mobile phone. The market is flooded with with mobile phones these days, and consumers are spoilt for choice. So what makes Google Android so different? And why should anyone start using a totally different OS altogether?
Currently, the better known mobile operating systems in the market are Symbian, Palm, Windows Mobile and more recently, OS X for iPhone. These operating systems are all competing for market share. But the similar aspect of these operating systems is that they are all closed systems. In other words, no one else, but the companies themselves can develop applications for the OS (with the exception of OS X, which we shall discuss later).
Therefore, all mobile phones that are equipped with these operating systems have limited applications that can be installed.
Recognizing the rising trend of the open network, Google is hoping to change all that with Google Android. With the SDK (Software Development Kit) offered by Google, developers can truly innovate and come up with applications that can be installed in Google Android. We have all seen this concept taking the Internet by storm.
For instance, we see the Firefox browser closing the gap with Internet explorer. It's able to catch up quickly because it allows developers to develop useful extensions for the browsers. To date, there are hundreds of extensions for the Firefox browser, and its popularity is still rising. The same goes for social community sites. MySpace used to be the top social community site. But Facebook became popular really fast, and have risen to be on par with MySpace. Again, it happened because Facebook started allowing developers to launch applications on its platform.
The signals are clear. The open concept works, and Google Android is looking to overtake all the other mobile operating systems. The project is now being undertaken by the Open Handset Alliance, which is a group of companies formed by Google, T-Mobile, Sprint, Vodaphone, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and other players in the mobile phone industry.
Eventually, fans can't help but compare Google Android with Apple's OS X. After all, the Apple iPhone is immensely popular, and it also allows developers to develop third party applications for the iPhones, and distribute them through Apple's website. However, the OS X also has a limitation - it can only work with the iPhone. So if you don't like the iPhone (rare, but it happens), you are out of luck.
Google Android looks set to become the leading OS. It's just a matter of time. Already, the Open Handset Alliance is working with mobile phone manufacturers to develop Android mobile phones. So don't be surprised to find mobile phones from major brands such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc. in the near future.

Proven Ways To Increase Your Website Traffic
It doesn't matter how well-designed your e-commerce site, photo album, or affiliate page is, without traffic, it's merely a collection of pixels on a screen. Once you have a web presence of some sort, what could be more important than getting more people to interact with it?
If you already have a site but don't see the traffic you expected, you must find out why and correct the problem. Promises of traffic are not enough. Were your expectations inflated by hype? Traffic from search engine spiders or robots it critical. Are search engine spiders able to read your content with ease? If search engine spiders have trouble reading your site, you can be certain it will never be seen by anyone else in great numbers.
The number one way to get traffic is to have well-designed content that meets a particular need. Visitors to that kind of site tell others and often link to it. Word-of-mouth and link-of site are surefire ways to grow your traffic.
OK. What if you already have those bases covered but still lack the numbers? Here are some proven ways you can employ to increase your traffic:
1) Buy Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads with the big 3 search engines. - Maybe it seems odd to pay to advertise your website, but would you shun advertising for a bricks-and-mortar store? Of chouse not. Perhaps PPC advertising should be a large part of your ad budget. If you're still hesitant, go find some testimonies of the effectiveness of Google AdWords. You'll discover that all the big name companies are already in the game.
2) Exchange or trade links with other sites. - You need to know that search engines do not value two-way links as highly as the one-way links inbound to your site, but they still have some value. Do a link search, and count how many links you currently have to your site. Concentrate your link trading effort on similar content sites. If you're a store, you don't need to exchange links with a competitor. Look for sites that offer information about your product.
3) Find your Keywords. - Use website statistics and analytics to discover the keyword phrases your site is found by. Then use a keyword tool (Google has a free one) to discover what keyword phrases that relate to your website have the most searches. If these two groups don't match, rework your website content, and build it around the high-traffic keyword phrases that most describe your product or service. If this is too daunting a task, there are plenty of professionals who can do it for you.
4) Use article writing as a way to build links to your site. Contrary to popular thinking, your articles don't have to be related in any way to your website. The link to your site in the author resource box or bio box is what counts. This type of link has the potential to multiply as other sites redistribute your article. Are you not a writer? You can always pay someone else to do it for you. Remember: the best article networks have the 'dofollow' tag in their outgoing links. This gets published by the search engines, and the search engine spiders love it.
5) Join an established forum in your field. All forums give you a place to tell about yourself and your website. You can also design a custom signature that incorporates your link. Be involved in the forum at your level of interest. It's a great way to not only grow traffic, but gain standing in your particular field.
6) Create an email list and market your site in the newsletters to your list members. Realize that it isn't lawful or ethical to blindside strangers with sales pitches and links in unsolicited email. You can create a form on your site for visitors to opt-in to your email list. You may think it looks like trying to build traffic from traffic you already have, and that's correct. Repeat visitors and loyalty is the best kind of traffic that can come from email marketing. If you're overwhelmed by the thought of where or how to start, Constant Contact has an email marketing software package that will do all the hard work for you.

Making Money Blogging - Your Ultimate Guide
Blogging is a very interesting thing to do. But making money blogging is even more interesting. Imagine being able to do what you like and earn from it at the same time. But what do you need to do to earn from it?
Making money blogging is not really very hard to do. Here are some simple steps that you can follow to help you get started.
1. Create a blog. If you do not have one yet, select a blog platform offering their services on the internet. Some blog platforms offer their hosting services for free. They are easy to use. In just a few clicks you can already create an account.
The only thing they require of you to sign up is an email address. Once you have signed up, designing your blog is just a piece of cake. There are already a lot of design templates to choose from.
You can also move around sections by using simple click and drag methods. If you want a more professional look, you can download software and host it on your own. This comes with a fee though. But for the price you pay, you can have more control over your blog. You also get to have your own domain name.
However, if you are not a technologically minded person, self-hosted blogs may be a little difficult for you but after a while you will surely get the hang of it.
2. Select a niche topic. A niche topic is a specific topic where you will specialize in. Making money will be difficult if you will write on varied topics in one blog. You may have different people visiting your blogs but they may not be loyal readers. Making money blogging becomes more feasible if you have a loyal set of readers.
They are the ones who go back to your blog regularly because of the certain interest they have for the topic that you write about. They make your blog traffic heavy. This is what most, if not all, advertisers like. Your topic should be something that you are also interested in or you are very familiar with. It should be something that you can write about over and over again without repeating yourself.
You can also choose to write about popular topics. Popular topics are those that many people read. However, since they are popular topics, there is surely a lot of bloggers writing about them already. It may be difficult to compete with already well-established blogs. But if you insist, just make sure to find something missing in their blogs and fill in that gap in yours.
3. Post frequently and write interesting posts. Your posts must not be far in between because you will lose your readers. Making money will become easy if you post a lot because the more posts you write, the higher your chances of being viewed. For advertisers, more views mean more exposure. And more exposure means more chances of sales.
4. Take time to promote your blog. You can start by asking your friends to visit your blog. You can also post a link in your social network account so other can easily access it. And once you have posted a few blogs, start connecting with other blogs related to yours.
5. Create relations with your readers. Always have them in mind when you write. When you receive comments from them, try to give a reply. This will make them feel they are connected to you in a more personal way.
Making money blogging is easy if you do all these. This is your ultimate guide to generate a lot of income.

Make Money Blogging
Do you want to make money blogging? If you do - you’re not alone. More and more bloggers are finding that blogging is a profitable medium. Whether it be to earn a few extra dollars a week to feed their coffee habit, or making enough money to stop them having to get a part time job to get through college, or whether they’ve got it to a point where they are able to make a full time living from their blogging - there are tens of thousands of bloggers making money from blogging.
In this page I want to share some information for beginners on making money from their blogs.
I will start by sharing my own top Money Making Methods (updated regularly) but below that point you to some great resources and teaching on how to increase your income from blogging.
How I Make Money BloggingWhat follows is a quick summary of my main income streams from blogging. Before you read it though - keep in mind that every blog is unique in how it can make money. Some of the following income streams will work on some blogs a lot better than others - the key is to experiment with as many as possible and see what works best for you.
The following income streams (from a number of blogs) have helped me to earn a six figure income each year for the last three years from blogging. I’ve ranked them from highest to lowest.
I hope you find it useful to see the mix and variety of ways that I earn a living from blogging.
1. AdSense
AdsenseDespite not using it here at ProBlogger any more (here’s why) I continue to use AdSense with amazing effect on my other blogs. I have them all set to show image and text based ads and find that 250×300 pixel ads work best (usually with a blended design). I don’t have much luck with their ‘referrals’ program but their normal ads work a treat and continue to be the biggest earner for me.
2. Chitika
ChitikaChitka continues to be a great performer for me on my blogs. They work best on product related blogs although their recent announcement of their Premium ad unit is exciting as they now offer ads with a non product focus that I’m hearing great conversions on (I have one reader who is getting $28 CPM on this ad unit).Chitika offers a range of ad units that I experiment with. I find their eMiniMalls work best and that Related Product Units are also good. Their Shoplincs product isn’t performing as well as it once did for me - mainly because I’ve been promoting it less and have driven less traffic to it. Over the time I’ve been using Chitika they’ve now earned me over a quarter of a million dollars - I can’t recommend them enough!
3. Private Ad Sales/Sponsorships
private-ad-salesPrivate ad sales directly to advertisers have continued to grow over the last few months and as a result they’re now my third highest income stream. I expect them to overtake both Chitika and AdSense in the coming months. This includes ad sales of the 125 x 125 ads here at ProBlogger as well as a campaign or two at Digital Photography School.
4. Amazon Associates
Amazon-Logo-1
Amazon’s affiliate program has been one of my big movers in the last 12 months. I used to make a few odd dollars from it - however in recent times it has become a significant earner for me (as I’ve shared previously). This quarter it grew even more than previously as a result of continued growth of DPS where I recommend books, software and cameras.
5. Miscellaneous Affiliate Programs
miscellaneous affiliate programsI run a variety of affiliate programs on my blogs - most of which bring in smaller amounts of money that don’t really justify a category of their own. These include - - Digital Photography Secrets (a camera technique series), Pro Photo Secrets (a great photoshop product) , Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Mentoring Program (about to open the doors again), SEO Book (Aaron’s legendary resource) and the excellent Teaching Sells course (which just continues to grow in what it offers to it’s members in terms of content).
The great thing about many of these programs is that they are of such high quality that they sell themselves and I am being emailed from readers who sign up to them thanking me for the recommendation!
6. Shopzilla
shopzilla.jpgAs I wrote recently - Shopzilla has really impressed me with how it’s performed over the last few weeks. It’s actually doing well enough to debut in this list at #6. The ads are similar to Chitika but the click values have been higher for me to this point. They don’t offer quite as many options as Chitika does in terms of types of ads but for a new ad network there’s definitely promising signs. I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to develop!
7. ProBlogger Job Boards
Jobboardheader The job boards here at ProBlogger continue to grow each month in the number of advertisements that are being bought. This enabled me to invest most of the money that they’d earned a while back into getting a new back end for the boards and to redesign them. It hit me today that the boards are now bringing in around $1000 a month in revenue which is pretty nice considering that they are so low maintenance to run. They also offer a service to readers and add value to the overall blog.
The only problem that I face with the job boards is that there are so many bloggers looking for work that the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. On the good side of things is that advertisers are reporting getting amazing quality of applications.
8. WidgetBucks
widgetbucks.jpgAnother newcomer to this list is WidgetBucks - another ad network that ProBlogger readers will be familiar with.
WidgetBucks is similar to Chitika and Shopzilla in many respects and works well on product related sites. It does best on sites with US traffic (the reason I’ve not used it as much as I get a lot of international traffic) so if you have a product related site with a US audience it’d be a no brainer to try out WidgetBucks. I’m hoping they’ll continue to expand their offerings in terms of ad types and visitor location.

9. Miscellaneous Advertising Programs
miscellaneous ad networksI also play with a number of other ad networks. Some I run as tests to see if I should review them here - and some are just advertising that run in the background on some of my smaller blogs. These include ShoppingAds, Feedburner RSS ads, Vizu (a poll advertising system), Kontera and Bidvertiser. Together these don’t add up to major earnings for me - not because they are not good, but because I don’t use them heavily (a blog can only run so many ads on it).
I think that that covers most of it although it’s worth mentioning that last time I did this list I also included TextLinkAds which used to be every bloggers favorite way to make money blogging by selling text links. I’ve stopped using them due to Google cracking down on them (read more about this here) but it’s worth noting that many bloggers still use them successfully - I advise to proceed with caution. private-ad-salesPrivate ad sales directly to advertisers have continued to grow over the last few months and as a result they’re now my third highest income stream.

Useful Resources for Bloggers Wanting to Make Money Blogging
A lot has been written on the topic of making money online from blogs. There is a lot of wonderful information out there - but also a lot of hype and sometimes dangerous information.
Below are a number of articles that I’ve written exploring some of the different ways that bloggers make money.
How Bloggers Make Money from Blogs
My Personal Income Streams
As an update to this post I’ve more recently written one on How I make Money Blogging which highlights the most profitable ways that I use blogs to generate income. I’ve also written extensively on how bloggers make money in ProBlogger the Book.
How do bloggers make money from blogs?
I’ve been reflecting this week about the amazing diversity of opportunities that are opening up for bloggers to make money from blogging.
I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to make money from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.
The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2005 has seen many options opening up. I thought I’d take a look at some of the methods that bloggers are currently using to make money through blogs.
Income Streams for Bloggers - How to Make Money Blogging
Advertising Programs - Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been with the addition of a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers looking to make money from their blogs. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from Google - Adsense. A more recent addition that many are using successfully are Chitika’s eMiniMalls and WidgetBucks, Text Link Ads.
Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick, Tribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, Pheedo, TextAds, Bidvertiser, Fastclick and Value Click (to name just some of the options) and there is a smorgasbord of options. Of course there is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising system currently in development (YPN is only available to US publishers).
Lastly there’s BlogAds - one of the first blog specific ad networks.
RSS Advertising - The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising also. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big money blogging through it to this point - but as improvements are made to the ad programs exploring this I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.
Sponsorship - In addition to the array of advertising programs that are available to join there is a growing awareness in the business of the value and opportunity that exists for them to advertise directly on blogs. I’m hearing more and more examples of this and have been fortunately to have a couple of ad campaigns of my own in the past month - one with Adobe a couple of weeks ago and another just completed with Ricoh for a new digicam over at my Digital Camera Blog. These are not isolated cases - as I say I know of many blogs exploring sponsorship with advertisers at present and suspect we’ll see more of it in the year ahead. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies - either in one off or a regular fashion - and they are able to make big money from their blogs doing so.
Affiliate Programs - There are larger affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small.
Digital Assets - Increasing numbers of bloggers have been developing other digital assets to support and add revenue streams to their blogs. By this I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses and tele-seminars being run by bloggers. My recent foray into this with the first series of the six figure blogging course that Andy and I ran a few weeks ago and have just released the study version of. This type of activity will only increase in future - in fact this week I’ve seen numerous examples of bloggers running courses.
Blog Network Opportunities - with the rise in popularity of Blog Networks - bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging - by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks - there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself - blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the set up/promotion/admin/SEO etc has it’s advantages also. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams.
Business Blog Writing Opportunities - as blogging has risen in it’s profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties - but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have been approached for such paid work. Check out Bloggers for Hire if you’re looking for this type of work.
Non Blogging Writing Opportunities - Also becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines and other non blog websites. Along side this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors - this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers than they knew who didn’t have a book deal!
Donations - Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full time after fund raising drives. Perhaps the most high profile of these was Jason Kottke of kottke.org who through the generosity of his readership was able to quit his job and become a full time blogger.
Flipping Blogs - Also more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’ - or selling of blogs. This has happened both on an individual blog level (I can think of about 20 blogs that sold this year) but also on a network level (the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL).
Merchandising - My recent attempt to sell ProBlogger.net T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress. While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising - quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales - especially blogs with a cult following. I’m not at liberty to discuss details - but I know of one largish blog which will see sales over $20,000 in merchandise for the calendar year of 2005.
Consulting and Speaking - While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses we’re also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background able to make money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios BECAUSE of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work - his area of expertise was something that he knew little about 18 months ago - but through his blog he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.
As time rolls on there are more and more ways that bloggers make money from their blogs opening up. Feel free to suggest your own ideas and experiences in comments below.
